Overload or short circuit

Too many electrical devices on one circuit, or a short circuit caused by bare wires or defective devices.

  • Unplug some devices from the cube tap, power bar or extension cord, or unplug the device with bare wires.
  • If too many devices are on the same circuit, unplug a few.
  • If the short circuit was caused by a defective device, unplug and repair it.
  • On the distribution panel (breaker panel), find the circuit breaker that was tripped by the overload or short circuit and reset it.
  • If the problem persists, call a master electrician (In French only) if you own the building. If you are a tenant, contact the owner.

Fuse panel

  • If your distribution panel has fuses, a fuse may need to be replaced.
  • Ensure that the replacement fuse has the same amperage rating as the one that blew (generally 15 amps for lighting and power outlets).
  • Never replace a fuse with one of a higher rating.

Prevent circuit overloads!

  • Avoid overloading power strips and cube taps.

Always use extension cords of the appropriate gauge (the gauge is printed on the extension cord).

  • Repair or replace devices with bare wires. See the Electrical safety section.
