What to do when service is restored?

In winter

  • Wait until the temperature and humidity have returned to normal before turning electronic devices back on (television, stereo, VCR, computer, microwave oven, etc.).
  • Gradually turn electrical appliances back on, including heating appliances (e.g. baseboard heaters).
  • Restock your emergency kit and provisions.
  • If you are still without electricity but power has been restored for your neighbors, follow the instructions under What to do when the power goes out.

If you had to leave the house

  • Initially turn on only one or two baseboard heaters to give the power system time to stabilize.
  • Close the water faucets (left open when you left).
  • Open the main water valve.
  • Fully open all faucets and let the water run until all air has been bled from the system.
  • Wait until the water heater is full (about 30 minutes) before turning on its circuit breaker.
  • Turn on essential electrical appliances one at a time, and wait 30 minutes before turning on the others.
  • Wait until the temperature and humidity have returned to normal before turning electronic devices back on (television, stereo, VCR, computer, microwave oven, etc.).
  • Consult the Web site of the Ministère de l'Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l'Alimentation for recommendations about food that remained in the refrigerator and freezer during your absence. (In French only)
