Charlesbourg Substation

Some of the satellite substations supplying the city of Québec and surrounding area are or will soon be operating at full capacity. Hydro-Québec therefore needs to add capacity to the system in order to meet the growing demand.

At present, the northeast district of the city of Québec is served by four substations: Beauport, Frontenac-1, L'Épinay and Neufchâtel. Their capacity will be exceeded within a few years.

Hydro-Québec plans to replace L'Épinay (69/25 kV) with a new substation, Charlesbourg (230/25 kV). L'Épinay, located on the east flank of Mont Irma-LeVasseur in the borough of Charlesbourg, has a small capacity compared with the other substations supplying the area. It was built in 1977 and is now obsolete, no longer being capable of meeting the demand.

Hydro-Québec hopes to begin construction in summer 2012 and to bring the new substation into service in fall 2013.
