Existing Wemindji switching substation

To meet growth in demand for electricity in the Cree community of Wemindji, Hydro-Québec TransÉnergie will build a new 120/25-kV transformer substation, which will replace the existing 25-kV switching substation. The project also includes related work on La Grande-1 substation and on the La Grande-1–Wemindji line.

Construction work, to commence in spring 2008, will require a power interruption from mid-July to mid-September. During this period, three generators will supply the community of Wemindji with power.

Since the new substation will be built on the site of the old one, anticipated impacts are minor and stem largely from construction work. Consequently, mitigation measures will be applied to reduce the noise from construction operations.

Commissioning of the new substation is scheduled for early fall 2008. Further information concerning the project will be communicated to public stakeholders.
