Tips and advice from Mr. Socket – Winterize your home

Fall is the ideal season to check your home for drafts—where cold air gets in and warm air escapes. Take the time to do a thorough inspection, and then take the appropriate measures. It’s sure to pay off!

Building envelope

Doors and windows

  • Check that they’re airtight, and apply caulking as needed. Don’t forget the joints around your door and window frames.
  • Install plastic film over drafty windows to serve as a storm windows. This will significantly reduce heat loss.
  • Apply a little lubricant (such as petroleum jelly) to weatherstripping to restore its effectiveness. If the weatherstripping is worn or has been painted over, it’s best to replace it.

Walls and floors

  • Eliminate drafts by injecting insulating foam into the space between the floor and the wall. Find out more about the products available so you can choose the right one.

Ceiling lights and fans

  • Make sure that cold air from the attic doesn’t infiltrate around the fixture, especially for recessed lights.

Garage door

  • Install an insulation blanket if the door is made of metal.

Heating system

Electric baseboard heaters

  • Clean them thoroughly to remove dust from the elements for maximum efficiency. Also check the heater controls and thermostats.
  • Move any furniture or objects that could come into contact with the heaters.

Forced-air system

  • Check the air ducts and change the furnace filter.

Hot-water system

  • Purge the radiators.

Dual-energy system

  • Check the filter and have the chimney swept.

You’ll be more comfortable in a home that’s ready for winter!

Did you know?

Before purchasing electronic thermostats, jot down the room where each thermostat will go and the power (in watts) of each baseboard heater to be controlled. That’ll make it easier to choose the right models.
