Located at the intersection of Boulevard Pie‑IX and the Rue J.‑B.‑Martineau, the Montréal‑Nord substation was built in 1952 and supplies some 30,000 customers in the Saint-Michel neighbourhood and in the nearby boroughs of Saint-Léonard and Montréal-Nord. Some of the substation’s equipment is aging and must be replaced.

To ensure the long-term operability of its facilities and the reliability of electrical supply, and to preserve the growth potential of this area of Montréal, Hydro‑Québec must rebuild this substation at a voltage of 315 kilovolts (kV). The grounds of the existing substation, which cover some 34,000 m2, are large enough to accommodate the new control and protection equipment. The facility will also be renamed Saint‑Michel substation.
