Undergrounding of 25-kV Power Lines Supplying Downtown Gatineau
Project overview
To meet growing electricity demand in downtown Gatineau, Hydro‑Québec will be reinforcing and improving the long-term operability of its distribution system.
To achieve this, Hydro‑Québec will be undergrounding existing overhead distribution lines between Val‑Tétreau substation and Rue Eddy.
A new underground concrete duct bank (roughly 2 km long) to hold the 25-kV lines will be installed.
Preliminary work will begin in fall 2023. Construction of the underground concrete duct bank and electrical works will last from May 2024 to December 2025.
Associated enhancements in the area

The undergrounding of the existing line means that Hydro‑Québec will be able to dismantle an overhead distribution line that runs between Val‑Tétreau substation and Hull‑2 generating station, along with an overhead transmission line that is no longer used.
- Removal of 9 transmission towers
- Removal of 14 distribution towers
