Pool maintenance made easy!
Other than snowbirds, what do Québec and Florida have in common? They have more pools per capita than anywhere else in North America! But unlike our neighbours to the south, Quebecers can only take a dip in an outdoor pool a few months out of the year. For such a short swimming season, pool maintenance can seem like a tedious and complex task.
Whether you already own a pool or your kids have been pleading with you to get one, here are some tips to help facilitate maintenance so you can enjoy more time in the water!

1 - Open your pool earlier rather than later
It’s much easier to treat water when it’s cold and the ice has just melted. Depending on the weather conditions in your area, you can generally start opening your pool in mid-April or before the water hits 21ºC (70ºF). If you wait too long, the higher temperatures will stimulate algae bloom, making it more difficult to clarify the water.

2 - Inspect your pool system
Avoid unpleasant surprises in summer by taking the time to check your pool system and replace any parts that are defective or showing signs of wear.
When pool season starts:
- See what condition the pool, pump and filtration system are in.
- Inspect the hoses, valves, skimmer and joints for damage.
- Check the expiry dates of any pool maintenance products you still have on hand.
When carrying out the inspection, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to the letter. If you need to, call on a professional.

3 - Save with efficient pool products
Consider installing energy-efficient products: an efficient pump could help you save up to 80% on your water filtration costs. Combine it with a pool timer to save even more!

4 - Check the water quality
Pool water maintenance should only take you a few minutes a day. Inquire about the different products that are available. Chlorinating granules are generally less expensive but require daily management, while chlorinating tablets cost a bit more but take a few days to dissolve. If you can, opt for a saltwater pool. Although it is pricier to install, it requires less maintenance throughout the year. You may even want to entrust your older teen with the task!

5 - Enjoy warmer water!
Already dreaming about taking a dip in the pool even though summer is still a few months away? If you’re considering a water heater, an electric heat pump will maintain a stable temperature and extend your pool season. It will also help you save up to 75% on your water heating costs. Or how about a solar heating system? It’s silent and doesn’t consume any energy.

6 - Consider a solar pool cover
When it comes to energy efficiency, a solar pool cover can’t be beat. If you rely on electricity to heat your pool, a pool cover could help you save up to 45% on your pool heating costs. And you can recoup the purchase price the first summer! With the different types of rollers available, there’s a solar cover for every pool: in- or above‑ground.
If you’re still unsure about opening and closing your pool yourself, many pool centers can take care of it for you. Find the nearest retailer and book an appointment.
