Construction of a 120/25‑kV substation in Coteau‑du‑Lac and a supply line

To sustain the region’s economic, residential, commercial and tourism development and to meet its electricity needs in the coming years, Hydro‑Québec needs to build a 120/25‑kilovolt (kV) substation in Coteau‑du‑Lac with a 120‑kV supply line

When operations begin, the new Coteau du Lac substation will include three transformers, two 120 kV feeder bays and several 25‑kV feeder bays for the distribution system.

Least-impact line route selected

Hydro‑Québec has selected a line route variant for each municipality based on environmental, social, technical and economic criteria and a proactive public participation process.

The collaboration of regional stakeholders was crucial in finding this solution and for optimal integration of the project in the host environment. Comments and concerns expressed by members of the public through the consultation activities were also taken into consideration.

Project background

The higher population, combined with industrial and commercial development, has resulted in a significant increase in electricity consumption in the region. That’s why the grid’s capacity needs to be increased.

Since 2009, significant investments have been made as part of a plan to develop the regional transmission system:

2009

Construction of the 120‑kV Vaudreuil Soulanges substation

2017

Construction of the 120‑kV Langlois–Vaudreuil Soulanges line

2019

Increasing capacity of Vaudreuil-Soulanges substation

2022

Reconstruction of 120/25‑kV Saint Polycarpe substation

In addition to the above investments, a new substation and a new supply line must be built to meet the significant increase in residential and industrial demand, the latter of which is associated, in particular, with the expansion of the Alta industrial park in Coteau‑du‑Lac.

Preliminary schedule

  • General information Summer 2022
  • Consultations Winter and spring 2023
  • Presentation of optimized project 2023
  • Government approvals 2024-2025
  • Construction 2025–2026
  • Commissioning 2026
