Hemmingford | Reconstruction of substation and a portion of the 120‑kV supply line
Project overview
Electricity demand is increasing and Hemmingford substation will reach its maximum capacity in the coming years. The current line from Saint‑Louis substation that supplies Saint‑Chrysostome and Hemmingford substations was built in the 1970s and its wooden H‑frames are damaged. They need to be replaced to improve grid reliability in the region.
Hydro‑Québec intends to carry out work to reinforce the power grid by 2028 in order to continue meeting the region’s electricity needs:
- Reconstruction and expansion of Hemmingford substation
- Reconstruction of the supply line that crosses the municipalities of Beauharnois, Sainte‑Martine, Saint‑Urbain‑Premier and Sainte‑Clotilde
- Addition of 25‑kV distribution lines
- Work inside Saint‑Louis substation in Beauharnois
Reconstruction of the supply line
The line will be rebuilt outside the right‑of‑way of the existing line, which will allow electricity supply to be maintained during construction. The line will be approximately 20 km long and supported by steel towers.
In fall 2024, Hydro‑Québec studied different route options in order to identify the line route with the least impact, that is, the one that provides the best balance between technical feasibility, respect for the environment and social acceptability.
Work schedule
- Preliminary consultation on study area Spring 2024
- Consultation on the project and the route variants Fall 2024
- Announcement of the selected route Winter 2025
- Permitting 2025‑2026
- Construction 2027
- Commissioning of substation and supply line 2028
