Host environment and study area

The study area is located within the boundaries of the city of Montréal in the Mercier–Hochelaga‑Maisonneuve borough.

Hydro‑Québec has defined a study area that is large enough to include all the components of the natural and human environment likely that are likely to be affected by the project. With a surface area of some 12 km2, the study area is bordered to the north by Rue Sherbrooke Est, to the east by Highway 25, to the west by Avenue d’Orléans, and to the south by the Port of Montréal on the Saint‑Laurent (St. Lawrence).

The study area includes industrial, commercial, institutional and residential areas. The western portion is largely residential (the Maisonneuve and Viauville neighborhoods). The center of the study area, where the new substation is to be located, is primarily industrial and commercial (Assomption Nord and Assomption Sud developments). To the east, the areas north of Avenue Souligny are mostly residential, while those to the south are mainly industrial and institutional.
