Created under the La Grande (1986) Agreement, the James Bay Eeyou Corporation (also known as the Eeyou Companee) manages funds granted to the Crees under various agreements with Hydro-Québec: the Mitigating Works (SOTRAC 1986) Fund, the Cree Community Fund and the Cree Economic Assistance Fund. Eeyou Corporation’s mandate includes promoting the traditional way of life and improving living and economic conditions in the Cree communities, in particular by providing training and employment opportunities for community members. The Board of Directors of the Eeyou Corporation is composed mainly of Crees, in this case the members of the Board of Directors of the Cree Regional Authority. The other members of the Board are representatives of Hydro-Québec.

An agreement signed by the different communities, the Cree Inter Band Treaty, establishes how the amounts in the Mitigating Works Fund and the Cree Community Fund will be distributed among the communities based on the impacts of the La Grande complex and the populations of the different communities. Amounts from the Mitigating Works Fund are distributed to the local trappers associations.
