Despite the transformations of the past 30 years, Crees still perform rites to mark major stages in life (Walking Out Ceremony, First Kill Ceremony, etc.). Other traditional pursuits also maintain cultural continuity:

• Summer gatherings at former trading posts or villages (Baie-du-Poste in Mistissini, Vieux-Comptoir in Wemindji, Old Nemaska, Fort George, the old trading post at Waswanipi, etc.)

• The Waskaganish and Nemaska canoe brigades, in which young people retrace fur trade routes on the Rupert River

These events give rise to gatherings, games, feasts and dances that enable the communities to strengthen family ties and traditions across generations.

Cultural camps and meeting places in the communities facilitate participation in these events. For instance, a big tent is put up next to the Mistissini Band Council office for gatherings and the exchange of traditional foods (bear, beaver, etc.).
