New, more efficient turbo blowers

Lallemand is a global company that produces and supplies raw materials to the baking, animal nutrition and spirits industries, among others. It operates an extensive network of commercial offices, laboratories, research centers and plants that produce yeasts, bacteria and other micro-organisms on five continents. Lallemand has always been engaged and proactive about improving methods in order to reduce its environmental impact.

Hydro-Québec’s role was to demonstrate concrete potential gains in energy efficiency by supporting the customer in measuring the energy consumption of the old equipment as compared to the new equipment in order to calculate actual savings.

“Before we met, Lallemand didn’t know much about grant programs. A simple update of the account with the company revealed an impressive potential for annual savings. At our first meeting, we identified a project for the Efficient Solutions Program – Customized Option that enabled Lallemand to reduce their electricity consumption by about 1 million kWh per year.”

Cost-effective modernization

In a context of increased competitiveness in the yeast field and given labor issues and the cost of parts, Lallemand wanted to find solutions to adapt to the current business environment. The equipment fleet was aging, which was negatively impacting the efficiency and reliability of the company’s operations. To improve the performance of its fleet of turbo blowers, the company began by launching a project at the Montréal plant, which it partially modernized.

The proposed solution: replace two turbo blowers with equipment that is more powerful and less costly from a maintenance perspective. Turbo blowers play an important role in the manufacturing of yeast because they supply air to the fermenters that produce it. Lallemand installed turbo blowers with highly efficient magnetic bearings. Compared to the old technology with standard contact bearings, the two new turbo blowers provide improved performance and significant energy savings estimated at $53,167 annually.

Teamwork every step of the way!

Hydro-Québec experts worked hand in hand with the members of Lallemand’s team to help them reach their goals. Since Lallemand was not aware of the Efficient Solutions Program, they were pleasantly surprised by the financial support that they were able to receive for modernizing their equipment. With Hydro-Québec’s financial assistance, the company had to pay only 43% of the implementation costs of this initial project, for a total of $294,283. This project was a great success, and Lallemand is already planning to replace four other turbo blowers and establish new energy-efficiency measures in order to reduce its carbon footprint even more.

“Thanks to the grant from Hydro-Québec, we expedited the process of modernizing our equipment and reduced our energy footprint by using less electricity and generating less noise and heat. The grant allowed us to start replacing all our turbo blowers in a relatively short period of time. This should enable us to remain competitive.”

— Sami Saïdi, Plant Manager at Lallemand

In addition to benefiting from more reliable and efficient equipment and annual savings, the company is also contributing to our collective goal of reducing GHG emissions. A winning project!

“Hydro-Québec was seen as a service provider with a traditional relationship, whose role is to provide electricity and receive payments. Thanks to the involvement of Ms. Ouellette and Ms. Chagnon-Warmoes, P.Eng., that relationship has now become a strategic partnership for Lallemand. Our discussions are a valuable source of advice and information that help us optimize our consumption, reduce our environmental footprint, and shape our strategic planning through various types of projects.”
