Five steps for carrying out an energy efficiency project

Using energy wisely is simple, cost-effective and something we can all do. And with the right resources and tools, it's easier than it looks. Bottom line: it pays to save energy, whichever way you look at it! Here are the five key steps you need to take to get started and obtain the financial support that will help you achieve a fast return on your investment.

1. Ask the experts

For a successful energy efficiency project, you don't need to be an expert—but you do need to have the right people on your side! Surround yourself with professionals from a range of fields: consulting engineers, contractors, electricians, architects and equipment manufacturers and suppliers. Depending on the nature of your project, they'll be able to recommend the most efficient systems and equipment to meet your needs and optimize your electricity use.

Hydro‑Québec is also here to help–and energy efficiency is something our teams know inside and out! Don't hesitate to reach out: we'll be more than happy to guide you toward the solutions that are best suited to your project, right from the design stage.

2. Plan your project

There are many ways to use energy more efficiently. Which should you prioritize? You may be considering a large-scale project, but keep in mind that simple measures can bring about big savings. For instance, installing a heat pump or an automated lighting control system can reduce your energy bill significantly. Here are some questions that can help identify your project:

  • Do you plan on replacing some of your equipment?
  • Are you planning on building or renovating?
  • What could you include for better energy performance?

The clearer your objectives are, the more likely the outcomes will meet your expectations and your company's needs.

Conducting an energy analysis to get a clear picture of your energy use is a great place to start for any business seeking to optimize efficiency in its buildings, equipment or processes.

Did you know?

For many businesses, heating costs account for nearly half of their annual electricity bill. Regular maintenance, better insulation of buildings and occupancy-based energy management can lead to significant savings.

3. See what financial support is available

Using less energy and using it more efficiently will result in recurring savings on your power bill. Plus, if you look into the available financial support, you'll see how much shorter your payback period can be!

The Efficient Solutions Program sets out over 200 energy efficiency measures that are eligible for financial support of up to 90% of equipment purchase and installation costs.

The OSE calculation tool makes it easy to find out everything you need to know. Here's what you need to do:

EFFICIENT SOLUTIONSFinancial support covering up to 90% of eligible costs for energy-efficient equipment.

4. Implement the planned measures

Once your project is defined and your budget confirmed, it's time to move into action and implement the chosen measures. This step involves ordering the equipment, installing the equipment and commissioning the equipment.

You may need to hire specialists to install, calibrate and conduct quality control on your new equipment. Once the work is completed, you can submit your application, and if it's approved, you'll receive the financial support to which you are entitled through the OSE tool. Just follow the steps outlined in OSE. Note: Be sure to use the OSE version that corresponds to the date of your first equipment purchase.

If the measures you've selected aren't covered under the Simplified Option of the OSE tool, you can submit project proposals through the Customized Option. If that's the case, then before you buy any equipment, contact Hydro‑Québec to find out how much financial support is available to you.

5. Track your results . . . and your savings!

Once the measures have been implemented, be sure to assess the performance of the equipment you've installed.

Check whether your aims have been met and the expected savings have materialized.
